together through sport

On 27 May, we saw the return of our inter-school sports day since the West Ham United Foundation hosted us in 2019.

Although a little different this year due to Covid-19 restrictions in place, pupils across all our schools and services took part in an action packed day of sporting challenges and activities in their bubbles.

The great thing about sports day is that it brings our pupils together. Classmates work as a team and most importantly, everyone involved has fun – which is needed now more than ever.

A demonstration of skill and sportsmanship

Pupils competed in football and basketball matches, putting their sporting skills to the test.

There were demonstrations of great sportsmanship throughout the day and staff were delighted by the enthusiasm shown by pupils for all the sporting activities and challenges which included archery, press-ups and sit-ups, penalty shoot-outs and beanbag throwing.

'No pressure.’

Ben Green, our wellbeing coach, attended sports day at Create Learning and said: ‘It was all hands on deck. All the staff were dressed like they were going to participate in the Olympics and were ready to give the pupils an experience like no other.’

‘We decided to have a non-competitive sports day this year; we wanted to focus on all pupils participating without the pressure of winning or the worry of losing.

‘The atmosphere was electric’

Ben adds: ‘The atmosphere was electric, words can’t really explain how positive the basketball match was, you had to be there! It was that good!’

‘Our main priority was bringing all pupils and staff together and creating an environment where they could thrive and associate positive feelings with physical activity.’

‘We were also pleasantly surprised by the athletic abilities of some of our pupils and engagement levels, it just goes to show when the environment is conducive it will bring out the best in the pupils.’

Ben concludes that: ‘the consensus from our pupils was that they had a fantastic day, despite the restrictions due to the pandemic.’

A huge thank you to everyone involved for making the day possible!
